How to Customize Your Header

With a graphic design program you can add photos, logo or name to your header to a pre-designed template.

You or your graphic designer can create a completely custom header for your website by uploading a JPEG or Gif 760x100-300 pixels.

Note: Our professional Design Team will design a  Custom Header $50...it's a great deal!

Being able to add your website or company name to your Header is one of the number one requests our support department gets from new site owners. Since it's not a built-in functionality, it can seem like a bit of a daunting task even figuring our where to start. This little tutorial should walk you through the process with relative ease.

First, lets make sure you have everything you need:

  1. You will need to make sure you have selected the template you want for your website under 'Design' -> 'Pre-Designed Templates' (there are over 1200 to choose from!), and applied it to your site.
  2. Next, you will need a graphics program. We searched high and low for an easy to use free graphics program, but just couldn't find one that would provide the quality of graphics we know you would like to see. So for this tutorial we have settled on Corel Paint Shop Pro. This program is very inexpensive for what it offers ($99.00 USD) and also comes with a 30 Day Free Trial. Chances are, now that you have a website you'll want a graphics program, but for now, just download and install the free trial before you continue with the tutorial: Corel Paint Shop Pro XI Free Trial.

Now, to get started! Just follow these steps:

  1. First, you need to get the Header on your computer so that you can edit it. So go to your website's home page and right-click with your mouse anywhere on the image. Click on 'Save Picture As' and save it to your Desktop so that you can find it easily later.

  2. Next, open up your Corel Paint Shop Pro Trial, and click to 'File' in the menu, and then 'Open' to open your Header. Browse to your desktop and you will be able to select the Header image from the files on your computer.

  3. Once the image is open, select the Text Tool from the toolbar.

  4. Now, click on your image in the general area you would like your text to appear (you can move the text when you're done). A Text Entry box will open.

  5. In the Text Entry box type the text you would like to appear on your Header. You will see a preview of the text appear across the header. Don't worry if it's not the color you want, we are going to edit this next.

  6. Next, highlight your text with the mouse, and move your mouse over the Background and Fill Properties color palette on the right side of the design window as shown.

  7. Click once on the Background and Fill Properties color palette. This will pop open the Material Properties palette for you to select the color you want. Move your mouse over the colored squares to select a color you like.

    TIP:
Make sure that it is a sharp contrast to your background color or your text wont show up well!

  8. Once you have selected a color, you can adjust it using the color and saturation wheels in the center, or if you are happy with it, just click 'OK' to apply your color selection. The selected color will now be reflected on your text and you can move on to the next step.

  9. Next, you get to choose your font style. Again make sure that the text in the Text Entry box is still highlighted with your mouse, then click the down arrow by the font dropdown menu as shown, and scroll through the fonts to select one you like.

    TIP:
The fonts that appear in the drop down menu will be the ones currently installed on your computer. If you want a wider selection of fonts, try http://www.1001freefonts.com.

  10. Next, you can choose your font size. Click the 'Size' dropdown menu and then click on the font size you prefer. 8 is smallest, 72 is the largest.

    TIP:
If you're picky, you can also enter custom sizes into the size box, like 60, or 100 to get an in-between or larger size.

  11. Now that you have selected your font color, style and size, you can click the Apply button on the text entry box to apply it to your Header. Don't worry if it's not perfectly placed where you want it to appear, that's next!

  12. Now that you have applied your fonts, you can drag the text to where you want it to appear on your Header. Just mouse over the center of the text 'vector' box until your cursor turns into four arrows pointing in opposite directions, as shown. Once you see the cursor change, click your left mouse button and drag the text wherever you want.

  13. If you're happy with the appearance of your text, you're done! Just click to 'File' and then 'Save' to save your changes. If you don't like it, just mouse over the text on the image again till you see the cursor change to the small Text Tool icon and left-click to open the Text Entry box and readjust the font color, style and size as per the instructions above.

  14. Now you're ready to upload your new Header! Just log into your website and click to 'Design' -> 'Edit Header.' Click browse by the 'Left' header box, and select your Header image from your computers Desktop and click 'Open' in the image browse window. Next, click 'Update.'

  15. You're done! Go to your website and you will see your newly edited Header on your website.
